ORDER FORM PROGRESS
The first is that we're still working to produce the online Ordering Form that I've been talking about for the last hundred years or so. Repeatedly we've seemed to be on the verge of having it up and working, and so I've delayed putting out a mailing by another week in order to have something really new and worthwhile to say. But, the world of software being the way it is, there's always some reason why we're not quite there yet. At least, it's better this way than putting out something half-baked that annoys everyone -- although that doesn't seem to concern some people. The software people looked into shopping carts for a while, but there always turned out to be some silly restriction that made the ones we looked at unusable, such as not being able to deal with a non-U.S. address, or adding shipping costs only as a percentage of total value or a fixed amount per item -- neither of which is much good for books. Amazon.com, of course, has a very comprehensive system, but when I heard some guesses of what it probably cost, it was clear that JamesPHogan.com Bookselling (actually, we're planning on calling it ManyWorlds) isn't in that league. In the end it we decided that for the volume we're probably talking about, a shopping cart would probably be overkill anyway, so we're putting something together ourselves to do what we want.
I shamelessly say "we." Actually, the work is being done by oldest son Alex, who has moved up to join Turbine Games in Massachusetts as a 3-D graphics designer. (How's the weather there, Alex? I'm in Florida right now -- sunshine, shorts, and T-shirts. Remember?) The other is Tim Gleason, like myself formerly of Digital Equipment -- and at around the same time -- who is the Sysadm for the Web site. I more-or-less nit pick and make lofty suggestions about the cosmetics. Alex pretty much has the Ordering Form working. It connects to PayPal for electronic processing, or alternatively enables mailed orders with Money Order or Cashier's Check. More on all this when it's accessible. The nice thing about it is that it's running off a database that Alex created. The next step will be to extend database support to the whole web site. That will enable all the items we have scattered through the site -- such as Bulletin Board postings, related book titles, journals, web URLs -- to be all retrieved and brought together in response to a key word selected from the Site Index (neglected for some time while all this has been going on, but which will be suitably expanded).
TRUTH UNDER TYRANNY
The other main reason for not attending to mail shots has been that I finally got down to the nonfiction book Truth Under Tyranny that I've also been getting impatient letters about. Well, after a sustained effort of concentration involving 10-to-16 hour days, 7 days a week, no Christmas, no New Years, it's finally FINISHED! FedExed off to my agent, Eleanor Wood, last Saturday (February 15). The reason for the rush was that I was due to return to Ireland on February 2 and needed to get it done before leaving since all the files and research materials are at my place in Florida. It didn't quite happen, but I was able to extend the return date on the ticket by a month.
As a peek to whet appetites, here's a list of the book's major sections.
ENGINEERING AND THE TRUTH FAIRIES
The Rush To Embrace Darwinism
OF BANGS AND BRAIDS
Cosmology's Mathematical Abstractions
DRIFTING IN THE ETHER
Did Relativity Take A Wrong Turn?
CATASTROPHE OF ETHICS
The Case For Taking Velikovsky Seriously
Politics And Ideology Masquerading As Science
GARBAGE IN, GOSPEL OUT: Computer Games and Global Warming
HOLES IN THE OZONE LOGIC: But Timely For Some
SAVING THE MOSQUITOES: The War On DDT
"VITAMIN R": Radiation Good For Your Health
RIP-OUT RIP-OFF: The Asbestos Racket
AIDS Heresy In The Viricentric Universe
Gothic Cathedrals And The Stars
I'll possibly post the complete Contents list as one of the samples when we get around to putting up a Title Page on the web site.
The paperback edition of Martian Knightlife is now out. And just coming into the stores, the Baen rerelease of The Genesis Machine, a March title, which should please those many people of recent years who have been asking where they can get a copy. Details of both these on the "What's New" page.
NEXT ON THE LIST
Again, finally getting around to something for which the requests have been piling up, the next major task will be the fifth book in the "Giants" series. No title as of yet. A brief outline is given on the web site, again at the What's New page.
All in all, this hasn't left room for a lot else. My thanks and appreciation indeed to those former and present U.S. Marines who wrote in after the last mailing to wish second-son Mike well after his joining up last summer. He's doing just fine, topped out in everything, and based currently in North Carolina after a post-basic training spell someplace in Missouri. Thanks, too for the invitations to visit your web locations and chat sites and get to know some of you personally. The foregoing perhaps explains why I've been a bit lax on that. But don't give up looking. (The aforementioned Tim Gleason is also a former Marine, incidentally.)
We've been trying to keep it fresh despite all the competing demand. The new postings since the last mailing include:
All this -- and more -- at http://www.jamesphogan.com/bb.php.
- more on our friend Bjorn Lomborg, the Danish Environmentalist who outraged the establishment by being honest
- a British scientist's fascinating theory of quantum evolution
- introduction to a heretical theory of the electric cosmos, which turns the established thinking upside down
- some good space news -- that NASA has been given the okay to go nuclear
