Project Orion
by George Dyson
By the son of the renowned physicist Freeman Dyson, who worked on the project. In 1957, a group of scientists led by Theodore B. Taylor and supported by the U.S. government, developed a program to build a four-thousand-ton spaceship propelled by nuclear bombs. The initial plan called for missions to Mars by 1965 and Saturn by 1970. After seven years of work, however, political obstacles brought the effort to a halt. Perhaps one of the most tantalizing "what if" stories of the twentieth century. A glimpse into the mindset of "can-do" America, the way it used to be.
