Rants, Raves, Interesting Science & Awful Puns
Why Do People Say That?
Great Online Reference
Wonderful for writers, editors, literary researchers, and the simply compulsively curious is a UK-based resource called The Phrase
Finder at http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/index.html, which provides and
alphabetically arranged collection of English language sayings and idioms, with background on their meaning and origin.
Among the examples selected for display on the Home page the last time I visited were:
- "Boxing Day" (in the UK, the day after Christmas Day) St. Stephen's Day in Ireland. Back-to-work day in the U.S
- Why are books "cooked"?
- Why a spelling bee? And not a or c or d
- Why on cloud nine? Not 7 or 8.
Ideal for browsing on wet Sunday afternoons, more interesting than most of what's on TV. And you can sign up to get a phrase of the week
sent in your e-mail.
